Care methods and durability... What kind of material is "grape leather"?

Table of Contents

Hello!
This is Ann from LOVST TOKYO PR.

We've discussed the functionality and durability of "Apple Leather," which is synonymous with our brand, in several previous articles.

This time, we'd like to delve into "Grape Leather," which is gaining increasing attention! Grape Leather is the material used in our "Grape Collection," including the highly popular "Grape Vine Tote Bag."

Please read on to the end, as we will answer frequently asked questions such as "What kind of material is grape leather?" and "How do I care for it?"

What kind of material is grape leather?

The "grape leather" we use is from an Italian brand called "VEGEA."

It is a synthetic leather made from the pomace of grapes, which is a byproduct of wine production.

The surface of grape leather, created by adding vegetable oil to grape pomace and blending it with water-soluble polyurethane, is surprisingly composed of over 50% natural raw materials. It is manufactured through a process that considers both human health and the environment, and it is characterized by a lack of peculiar chemical odors or irritants.

And the outer material, which leverages the fibrous properties of grapes, boasts a moist, substantial, and luxurious feel. The elegant matte surface yields with a supple touch when traced with a fingertip. It will feel as familiar as a long-loved bag from the day you purchase it.

Therefore, even when new, it feels less stiff and heavy, allowing for a comfortable start to its use.

What are the characteristics of grape leather?

① Durability

The durability of "grape leather" is, in fact, highly regarded in various fields.

It has passed tests measuring strength, hardness, pressure, and flexibility, and meets the strictest REACH* standards set by the EU.

As a result, it is used in various fields, not only for bags and wallets but also for furniture, luxury car interiors, and packaging materials, and its lifespan is said to be over 5 years.

*Regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals established by the European Union

② Water Repellency

Just like "Apple Leather," the water resistance of "Grape Leather" is one of its charms.

Compared to general animal leathers, water marks do not remain on wet areas, so you can use it casually even on rainy days.

If it gets wet, simply wipe off the moisture with a dry cloth. This is a welcome feature for items used daily.

③ Care Instructions

"Grape Leather" products generally do not require special maintenance.

However, if the surface ever gets dirty, simply wipe it gently with a soft towel thoroughly wrung out with warm water, then wipe it dry with a dry cloth.

Unlike "Apple Leather," the use of creams or oils is not recommended. By keeping it clean, you can enjoy the original texture for a long time.

Leaving it in direct sunlight or in high humidity for long periods can lead to deterioration, so it's best to avoid such environments.

The Potential of "Grape Leather" in Sustainable Fashion

"Grape Leather" was born when its founder, an architect and interior designer, realized the need for a sustainable alternative to animal-based materials.

Since its inception, this meticulously crafted new material has captivated people worldwide, demonstrating new possibilities for biomaterials.

Its substantial texture and elegant luster give LOVST TOKYO's items a unique depth, earning high praise from many customers.
